Paris Saint-Germain forward Ferran Torres has withdrawn from the Spain squad due to a persistent ankle injury ahead of the team’s upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Torres had been training with Luis de la Fuente’s squad despite discomfort in his left ankle, but the symptoms failed to completely clear up, prompting the decision to release him from international duty.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed the 26-year-old’s departure after consultations between the national team’s medical staff and Paris Saint-Germain.

The RFEF said: “Given the persistence of the symptoms, it has been decided to release the player from the squad in order to prioritize his recovery.”

Torres will return to France for further treatment as Spain prepare for their fixtures at the Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo and in Split.

According to Sport, the forward had experienced minor discomfort in his left ankle but had continued training in recent days.

“However, the problem persisted despite his attempts to play through it.

The federation said its medical team had remained in close contact with Torres’ club throughout his time with the national team.

“The doctors of the Spanish Federation made the decision in agreement with their counterparts at Paris Saint-Germain,” the RFEF stated.

“The Spanish Football Federation’s medical staff have been in constant contact with his club’s medical team since the start of the training camp, and the entire process has been monitored jointly.”

Torres’ withdrawal leaves Spain without a key attacking option for the Nations League fixtures, while the coaching staff have moved quickly to bring in a replacement.

Real Madrid youngster Carlos Espi has been promoted from the Spain Under-21 squad to the senior team for the first time.

The 21-year-old earned his maiden call-up after an impressive run with the U21s, including a five-goal performance that underlined his form at youth international level.

Espi has joined the senior squad as Spain prepare for their double-header against Czechia and Croatia, giving the youngster his first opportunity to work with de la Fuente’s senior side.
