Just in: Mourinho returns to Real Madrid on three-year deal

Former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho will return to the Santiago Bernabeu after agreeing a three-year deal to take charge of the Spanish giants for a second time.

According to BBC Sport, an agreement has already been reached between both parties, although the Portuguese coach will not be officially unveiled until after the club’s presidential election on June 7.

He leaves Benfica after taking charge of the Portuguese side in September and guiding them to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga.

The 63-year-old previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup during a successful first spell.

He replaces Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed in January following Xabi Alonso’s departure but failed to halt the club’s decline during a disappointing campaign.

Madrid’s decision to bring Mourinho back follows a season that ended without silverware.

That contrasts sharply with his previous spell at the club, when he delivered three major trophies and helped restore Madrid’s domestic dominance.

Barcelona secured the 2025/26 La Liga title after a 2-0 victory in El Clasico, while Bayern Munich knocked Los Blancos out of the Champions League with a 6-4 aggregate quarter-final win.

Since leaving Madrid in 2013, Mourinho has managed several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

His second spell at Chelsea produced Premier League and EFL Cup success in the 2014/15 season before he departed by mutual consent the following year.

He later joined Manchester United and won the Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield during his first season at Old Trafford.

Mourinho also managed Tottenham Hotspur, Roma and Fenerbahce before taking over at Benfica.

His time at Roma delivered the UEFA Europa Conference League title in 2022, adding another European trophy to his decorated managerial career.

Real Madrid will now hope Mourinho’s experience and winning pedigree can help return the club to contention in Spain and Europe after a frustrating season that ended without a trophy.
