Venus Williams to become oldest woman to compete at Australian Open

The seven-time major singles champion will return to Melbourne Park for the first time since 2021, extending her career to a new milestone at the tournament scheduled for January 18 to February 1.
Venus, who has played only a limited number of singles matches in recent years, will surpass the previous age record held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she competed in 2015.
“I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer,” she said.
“I’ve had so many incredible memories there and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”
The five-time Wimbledon champion and two-time US Open winner reached the Australian Open singles final in 2003 and 2017.

She is also a four-time doubles champion at the tournament.
Williams is set to begin her preparations at the Auckland Classic next week before heading to the Hobart International immediately ahead of the Australian Open.
She returned to competitive tennis at the US Open last year following a 16-month break from the tour.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff described Williams’ return as “incredible”, praising the longevity of her career.
“She’s a legend of the sport, so it will be cool to see her back in action,”
