The world champions made a lightning-fast start when Lamine Yamal capitalised on Marc Guehi’s mistake to give Spain the lead inside two minutes.
Spain threatened to extend their advantage as England struggled to cope with the intensity, but Tuchel’s men gradually fought their way back into the contest.
Tuchel had spoken before the match about the need to “embrace the chaos” and England eventually did exactly that, turning the game around before half-time.
Anthony Gordon equalised in the 36th minute after Elliot Anderson seized on a Nico Williams error and released Jude Bellingham, who carried the ball forward before finding the forward to finish from around 20 yards.
England then moved ahead four minutes later when Harry Kane met Nico O’Reilly’s cross with a header, with Marc Cucurella inadvertently helping the ball into his own net.
Spain returned for the second half looking to regain control, but England had a major opportunity to extend their advantage when Bellingham won a penalty after referee Davide Massa reviewed a challenge by Rodri.
Kane stepped up in the 54th minute, but the England captain slipped as he took the spot-kick, striking the ball against his standing foot before it crashed against the crossbar.
That miss proved crucial as Spain responded by changing the shape of the game from the bench.
Luis de la Fuente replaced Nico Williams and Ferran Torres with Álex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal in the 55th minute, introducing greater creativity and control through the middle.
The substitutions immediately changed the momentum.

Baena levelled four minutes after coming on, collecting the ball around 20 yards out before firing past James Trafford after Spain capitalised on a loose pass from O’Reilly.
Spain had shifted the pressure onto England and eventually completed the comeback in the 74th minute.
Baena slipped a pass through to Oyarzabal, who lifted the ball over Trafford to restore Spain’s lead. It was another decisive moment for the forward after his winning goal against England in the Euro 2024 final.
England pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with Bellingham forcing a save from Unai Simon in stoppage time, but Spain held on to complete a 3-2 comeback win.
