Garnacho takes subtle dig at Chelsea after completing Aston Villa move
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineAlejandro Garnacho has aimed a subtle parting shot at Chelsea after completing his move to Aston Villa, highlighting the opportunity to play Champions League football as a major factor behind his decision.
The Argentina international has joined Villa on an initial season-long loan from Chelsea as he looks to revive his career following a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge.
The deal reportedly includes an option for Aston Villa to make the transfer permanent for around £42.5 million next summer.
Garnacho’s emphasis on European football comes after Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and failed to qualify for any European club competition.
Speaking after completing the move, the winger said joining a club competing in Europe was important as he seeks to rediscover the form he showed during his early years at Manchester United.
“I think it’s also important to play European competitions,” Garnacho said.
“I was looking for a club to get confidence and try to be the player that I was like years ago from my first years ago at Manchester United.
“I had seen the Europa League [victory] last season and joining to play in the Champions League also is important to be part of this and Champions League is the best.

“We’re going to play it this season.
“I’m really happy and hopefully we can do something important.”
Garnacho arrives at Villa Park following a challenging period at Chelsea, where he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
The winger made just 14 Premier League starts for the Blues last season and struggled to nail down a regular first-team place under Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
His move to Chelsea had followed a tense departure from Manchester United after a falling out with former manager Ruben Amorim.
The relationship deteriorated further following Garnacho’s reaction to being left out of the starting line-up for the 2025 Europa League final.
The Argentine will now look to rebuild his career under Unai Emery, with the Villa manager playing an important role in convincing him to make the switch.
Garnacho revealed that a conversation with Emery gave him confidence about joining the club.
“I spoke with Unai before I came here, and he gave me that confidence, that confidence to be here,” he said.
Garnacho will now turn his attention to establishing himself in Emery’s side, with Champions League football providing the winger another opportunity to prove himself at the highest level.
