Ronaldo risks six-month suspension after leaving Portugal camp

Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension of up to six months after leaving the Portugal national team camp in Copenhagen ahead of the Nations League meeting with Denmark.

The veteran forward’s departure came after he was left on the bench during Portugal’s match against Norway and amid reports of tension involving head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo subsequently held talks with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before leaving the camp, according to reports.

The forward could face disciplinary action under the FPF’s regulations if his departure is deemed to have been without valid justification.

The federation’s disciplinary code states: “Any player who, having been duly called up, abandons or fails to attend training, a match, or any activity of the national teams or related to the sporting representation of the FPF or Portugal without justification, shall be sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months and, accessorily if a professional player, a fine between 500 and 1,000 euros.”

The reported disciplinary risk follows Jesus’ decision to leave Ronaldo as an unused substitute against Norway and his subsequent explanation of the selection decision before the Denmark fixture.

Jesus said: “I can promise whatever I want. I am the manager.

“I am the coach, and I told the player he was not going to play.

“I’ll put him on the bench; if I need you for 30 minutes, you’ll play, and if not, you won’t.

“No player will ever change my mind. Not him, not anyone in football. Not any president either. Never, zero.”

Ronaldo’s departure also came against the backdrop of his absence from Portugal’s training activities.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that the captain did not train during the session at Parken Stadium.

An official FPF statement read: “Parken Stadium training update: Joao Felix rejoined the group. Francisco Conceicao (ruled out for tomorrow) and Cristiano Ronaldo did not train.”

Ronaldo had already missed the previous training session in Sweden, while Francisco Conceição was also ruled out of the Denmark match.

His continued absence meant he was not included in the squad for the fixture.

Any disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo would depend on whether the FPF considers his departure to have been justified under its regulations.
