Instagram ends support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages

The development was announced in an update published on Instagram’s Help page on Friday.
The platform said: “End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after 8 May 2026.”
Instagram added that users whose chats were affected by the change would receive instructions on how to save their messages and media files.
The company explained: “If you have chats that are affected by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages that you may want to keep.”
It also noted that some users might need to update their application before accessing the download option.
End-to-end encryption is designed to ensure that only the sender and receiver can access messages and calls, preventing third parties, including the platform owner, from viewing conversations.
Explaining the feature, Instagram stated: “When you send a message in an end-to-end encrypted chat, your device locks the message as it’s sending.

“This message can only be unlocked by a device that owns one of the special keys for that chat.”
The company said the same protection previously applied to voice and video calls on the app.
Instagram added: “No one can read your messages or hear your calls except the people who have these special keys – not even Meta.
“We couldn’t even if we wanted to.”
The platform, however, clarified that users could still share encrypted content by reporting messages or forwarding them outside the protected chats.
The decision has triggered online discussions around digital privacy and data security as social media companies continue to review messaging and moderation policies.
Meta Platforms, Instagram’s parent company, did not immediately provide additional details on why the feature was discontinued.
