Iran extend unbeaten World Cup start with Belgium draw
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineIran produced another disciplined performance to hold Belgium to a goalless draw and remain unbeaten after two matches in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result marked the first time Iran have avoided defeat in their opening two matches at a World Cup and left qualification to the Round of 32 firmly within reach heading into the final group game.
The match in Los Angeles was dominated by Belgium.
But Iran’s resilience and the brilliance of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand ensured Amir Ghalenoei’s side secured a valuable point.
Iran also made history before kick-off, fielding the oldest starting line-up in a World Cup match since records began in 1966, with an average age of 32 years and 181 days.
Belgium controlled possession from the opening whistle and created several opportunities, with Maxim De Cuyper, Kevin De Bruyne and Youri Tielemans all testing Beiranvand.
Despite spending long periods defending, Iran nearly stunned the Red Devils in the 14th minute when Hossein Kanani forced Thibaut Courtois into a fine save.
The Asian side thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half after Mehdi Taremi finished off a clever free-kick routine, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.
Iran continued to threaten on the counterattack and came close again after the break, with Courtois producing another important stop to deny Taremi.

Belgium’s frustration grew as Beiranvand delivered a goalkeeping masterclass, repeatedly denying De Cuyper and preserving the deadlock despite relentless pressure.
The turning point arrived in the 66th minute when Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red card for bringing down Taremi after misjudging a back pass.
With a numerical advantage, Iran pushed for a winner but could not find a breakthrough, while Belgium also failed to convert their late opportunities despite creating 23 shots and enjoying 68 per cent possession.
The draw leaves both teams on two points heading into the final round of group fixtures.
Iran will face Egypt knowing victory could secure a place in the knockout stage, while Belgium must overcome New Zealand to keep their qualification hopes alive.
