Team Greece has made a winning start to its 2026 All Nations Cup campaign, defeating Chile 1–0 in a hard-fought opening match to claim three valuable points.
The closely contested encounter saw both sides enjoy periods of dominance, with Greece ultimately finding the breakthrough in the closing minutes to secure an important victory against a strong Chilean outfit.
Greece started on the front foot, controlling the early stages and creating several promising chances but failing to convert its opportunities. Chile responded late in the first half, putting the Greek defence under pressure as the sides went into the break locked at 0–0.
Chile carried that momentum into the second half, taking control and testing Greece’s defensive resolve. However, timely substitutions helped the Greek side regain its footing and shift the momentum back in its favour.
With just five minutes remaining, Greece finally broke the deadlock, scoring the decisive goal to seal a 1–0 win and launch its tournament campaign on a positive note.
Greek Community of Melbourne Board Member Michael Karamitos congratulated the team on its performance and acknowledged the people helping support the campaign.
“It’s always good to get a win first up, especially against such a high-quality and skilled team like Chile,” Karamitos said.
“A very big thank you to our coaches George Katsakis and Con Tangalakis, as well as our major sponsor Mr Pitta, who has supported the team financially this year.”
Karamitos also encouraged the Greek community to turn out for the team’s upcoming matches.
“We at the Community look forward to the matches to come and encourage as many supporters as possible to come and support our boys.”
Team Greece will look to build on its opening victory when it faces Somalia in its second group-stage match on Sunday, October 18, at 1:00 pm.
The Greek Community of Melbourne has encouraged supporters to attend, get behind the team and help carry the momentum into the next stage of the 2026 All Nations Cup.
