Greek Prosecutors Call for Stronger Security After Reported Threats

The Greek Prosecutors’ Union has called for stronger security measures to protect prosecutors, warning that recent developments highlight the growing risks faced by judicial officials and the need to safeguard the independence of the justice system.

In a new statement, the Union said recent reports about the alleged prevention of a planned criminal attack targeting a retired Supreme Court prosecutor, together with previous incidents involving judicial officials, demonstrate the urgent need to review and strengthen the existing protection framework for prosecutors.

The Union stressed that prosecutors handling organised crime, terrorism, corruption and other serious criminal cases, as well as those who have served in positions of significant responsibility, continue to face security threats that often persist even after they leave active service.

It argued that authorities must strengthen security measures both inside and outside court buildings through a continually updated and effective protection framework that reflects the responsibilities and risks associated with prosecutorial duties.

The Union emphasised that protecting prosecutors is not a personal privilege but an essential condition for the independent, uninterrupted and impartial exercise of their duties. It added that ensuring their safety is fundamental to upholding the rule of law and the proper administration of justice.

The Prosecutors’ Union urged the Greek government to treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves and to act before existing security risks lead to more serious consequences.
