A 30-year-old Greek man accused of supplying heavy weapons to members of Turkey’s notorious Daltonlar criminal organisation surrendered to Greek police on Friday.

The man became involved in an investigation into the transfer of heavy weaponry allegedly destined for members of the Turkish criminal group.

Greek authorities believe the weapons may have been intended for a sniper who could have been preparing to carry out a contract killing.

Authorities initially released both suspects — the Greek national and a 36-year-old Turkish national — after their arrests. A prosecutor then intervened, leading the Council of Appeals to issue a ruling ordering their pre-trial detention.

Police subsequently located and arrested the 36-year-old Turkish suspect outside the Thessaloniki regional unit.

How police uncovered the weapons

The investigation intensified when officers from the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime, Greece’s equivalent of the FBI, spotted the two men leaving a ground-floor storage area at a commercial property.

Police searched the paper package and bag they were carrying and seized:

  • A long-barrelled rifle fitted with a scope, suitable for use by a sniper.
  • A submachine gun of the Uzi type.

According to the testimony of one of the suspects, the weapons were ultimately destined for members of the Daltonlar criminal gang in Turkey.

The group has repeatedly drawn the attention of law-enforcement authorities over violent incidents and criminal disputes.

Greek investigators believe the rifle and other weapons may have been intended for a sniper as part of a possible contract killing.

Members of Turkish criminal organisations operating in Greece have previously carried out contract killings, mainly targeting fellow Turkish nationals.
