Greece Launches Supercomputer Ranked 31st Worldwide
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesGreece will inaugurate its national supercomputer, DAIDALOS, on Monday, 19 October, at 10:30 am, at the Lavrio Technological and Cultural Park of the National Technical University of Athens, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attending.
DAIDALOS delivers a measured computing performance of 85.69 petaflops, ranking 31st worldwide in the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. It also ranks 23rd in the Green500 list for energy efficiency.
The supercomputer operates in a new data centre housed in the historic building of Lavrio’s former power station. It represents a major addition to Greece’s national computing infrastructure.
The National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET) is implementing the project, which has a total budget of €58.9 million.
DAIDALOS will provide computing resources to universities, research centres, start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, and public-sector organisations. Its capabilities will support scientific simulations, large-scale data processing and the training of artificial intelligence models.
The supercomputer will also serve as the computational core of PHAROS, Greece’s AI Factory. The initiative connects the infrastructure with tools and expertise to help the research and business communities develop AI applications.
The project forms part of Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Greece 2.0. The European Union supports its funding through NextGenerationEU and the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU).
