A key piece of potential evidence in the Tempe train crash trial will now undergo forensic examination after a Larissa court ruled that the confiscated mobile phone of the stationmaster on duty at the time of the disaster can be examined.
The ruling allows police forensic experts to investigate the phone for calls, text messages, multimedia messages and communications through applications including Viber.
Experts will also attempt to recover deleted files and messages from the device.
The request was brought before the court by a lawyer representing relatives of victims of the February 2023 disaster, which killed 57 people.
The examination could establish what communications took place before and around the time of the fatal collision, potentially adding evidence to the court’s assessment of events surrounding the crash.
The stationmaster was on duty when the passenger and freight trains collided near Tempe on February 28, 2023.
The disaster triggered a major investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and Greece’s railway safety and signalling systems.
The trial in Larissa is continuing, with relatives of those who died taking the stand and recounting the impact of the disaster on their families.
The forensic examination of the phone will now form part of the evidence considered by the court as proceedings continue.
