Copernicus Activated to Map Wildfire Damage in Achaia

Greek authorities have activated the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) to map areas of Achaia Regional Unit damaged by the wildfire that broke out on Friday, July 31, 2026.

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced that the Directorate for Emergency Planning of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, acting as Greece’s National Contact Point, activated the Copernicus Emergency Management Service – Mapping under activation code EMSR 910, following instructions from the Secretary General for Civil Protection.

The activation aims to produce detailed maps and geospatial data for the fire-affected areas of Western Greece, supporting emergency response agencies and authorities responsible for managing the aftermath of the wildfire.

The European Union has approved Greece’s request, and authorities expect satellite-based mapping products and analytical data to become available shortly.

According to the ministry, the Directorate for Emergency Planning will distribute the Copernicus maps and datasets free of charge to all participating agencies to assist with emergency operations, damage assessment and recovery planning.
