Greek Police Foil Turkish Mafia Assassination in Thessaloniki

Greek police have prevented a potentially violent clash between rival factions of the Turkish mafia in Thessaloniki, allegedly foiling an assassination plot involving a sniper.

The alleged target was reportedly a member of the Daltonlar, a Turkish criminal organisation that has split into rival factions.

Authorities arrested two alleged mafia members in Palaio Faliro as they investigate cases involving extortion, assaults and individuals known by the nicknames “Pitbull” and “Bulldog.”

According to Greek broadcaster SKAI, the incident unfolded in Thessaloniki six days ago. Officers from the Northern Greece Sub-Directorate for Combating Organised Crime, acting on information from Interpol and foreign law enforcement agencies, arrested a 36-year-old and a 30-year-old man in the area of Sykies.

The two men allegedly had responsibility for transporting and delivering weapons to individuals who were expected to carry out the assassination.

Police located the suspects as they left a ground-floor storage facility. One carried a paper package while the other held a blue bag.

Inside, officers found a Yugoslav-made military firearm fitted with a precision telescopic sight, a Uzi-type submachine gun, radios and ammunition.

Weapons allegedly linked to prison inmate

The 36-year-old reportedly told investigators that an unidentified person handed him the weapons on September 10 in the Evkarpia area.

He allegedly collected them on behalf of a 49-year-old Turkish national currently held at Korydallos Prison in Athens.

According to his account, the weapons were destined for a member of the Daltonlar organisation.

Despite the intelligence about a planned assassination and the weapons seized during the operation, authorities released both suspects.
