The Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis, visited Samos yesterday as Greece maintained a high state of readiness in the Eastern Aegean amid reported Turkish military movements opposite the island.

Kostidis visited the area of responsibility of the 79th Higher National Guard Battalions Command (79 ADTE) “Mykali”, accompanied by Lieutenant General Dimitrios Vakentis, commander of the Higher Military Command of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

The visit came amid reports that Turkey has moved a commando brigade opposite Samos, adding significance to the Greek Army chief’s operational inspection.

Kostidis inspected military facilities, equipment and personnel at two camps before addressing personnel at the 79 ADTE’s main station.

During his address, he issued instructions to maintain maximum operational readiness and constant vigilance.

The visit highlighted the Greek military leadership’s focus on the defence of the country’s eastern Aegean islands and its readiness to respond to developments in the region.
