Greece’s Ministry of Culture has announced grants totalling €2.36 million to support theatre and dance productions across the country following the completion of an evaluation of proposals submitted through the Ministry’s Register of Cultural Organisations.

The funding forms part of the “Creative Greece – Contemporary Culture Grants 2026” programme and supports professional theatre companies, theatre productions, festivals, tours and events, as well as classical and contemporary dance initiatives.

The programme aims to strengthen contemporary culture across Greece, promote significant artistic events and initiatives, and renew public interest in contemporary artistic creation.

Mendoni: “We support creators and cultural organisations”

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said theatre and dance remain living forms of expression, creativity and dialogue that continually renew the relationship between culture and society.

She said the €2.36 million in grants would provide practical support to creators and contemporary cultural organisations, strengthening their productions and helping them present their work across Greece.

The programme will support theatre productions, festivals, tours and events, alongside classical and contemporary dance projects.

Mendoni placed particular emphasis on initiatives that travel to regional areas and islands, expanding public access to contemporary culture and strengthening links between artists and local communities.

She described the programme as a substantial investment in cultural professionals, their ideas and their creativity, adding that the ministry used transparent and objective evaluation procedures to support worthwhile initiatives.

Fotilas: Funding will reach creators and productions

Deputy Culture Minister Iason Fotilas said theatre and dance succeed when they meet their audiences and require stages, rehearsal time and continuity.

He said the Creative Greece programme provides practical support to the cultural community rather than serving as a symbolic gesture.

According to Fotilas, the funding will reach productions, groups and creators who need support to complete their artistic projects and present them to the public.

He said the results in the theatre and dance categories reflect the ministry’s priority, with hundreds of applications and a selection process based on strict transparency and objective evaluation criteria.

€1.675 Million for Theatre

Applicants submitted 265 proposals in the Theatre Productions, Festivals, Tours and Theatre Events category.

The Theatre Advisory Committee unanimously recommended funding for 103 applications, with a total value of €1.675 million. The ministry also approved 57 sponsorships (official endorsements).

The committee included academics, directors, actors, scenographers, costume designers, theatre scholars, critics and an archaeologist specialising in museums and historical archives.

€685,000 for Classical and Contemporary Dance

Applicants submitted 83 funding requests in the Classical and Contemporary Dance category.

The ministry approved 48 applications, allocating a total of €685,000. A further 22 proposals received official ministry sponsorship.

The Dance Advisory Committee comprised choreographers, dance teachers, a visual artist and academic, a dancer and choreographer, and an academic specialising in dance anthropology and history.

The ministry said the full evaluation results and the organisations receiving funding appear in the relevant tables attached to the announcement.
