Antonis Remos on Giorgos Mazonakis: ‘He leaves a great legacy’ ahead of 30 year concert

Antonis Remos has spoken with emotion about the sudden death of fellow Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, saying his greatest legacy will be the music and unforgettable moments he shared with audiences.

Speaking to Mega’s Live News ahead of his major concert in Thessaloniki on Saturday, Remos said Mazonakis’ death was particularly difficult because he was so young.

“What happened was very abrupt and sudden. It is a great shame that such young people leave so suddenly,” Remos said.

The singer urged people to remember Mazonakis through his music and the artistic legacy he leaves behind.

“What we will keep is all this legacy he leaves us, all these songs, all these wonderful moments that we have experienced, both you as listeners and us as the people closest to him,” Remos said.

“Let only these moments remain. All the rest that happens, why and how it happened, are unfortunately things that are only sad, only bad.”

Remos calls for justice to take its course

Remos also addressed the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mazonakis’ death.

He said the authorities should establish exactly what happened and hold anyone responsible accountable.

“Justice should do its job and reveal what is necessary and, if there are those responsible, they should be punished accordingly. But now, unfortunately, nothing is going back,” he said.

His comments come as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s sudden death.

While mourning the loss of Mazonakis, Remos is also preparing for a major milestone in his own career.

The singer will perform in Thessaloniki on Saturday as part of celebrations marking 30 years in Greek music.

“It’s been thirty years. It’s been a journey of a lifetime,” Remos said.

The concert has attracted fans from across Greece and the wider Balkans, with visitors travelling to Thessaloniki for the celebrations and accompanying exhibition.

“They have come from all over Greece. They have come from many places, from the surrounding areas, from the Balkans,” he said.

“People have come for this week, this weekend, to see the exhibition and of course to see my concert, and I think that is very honourable and very beautiful.”

Remos said he wants to put the surrounding controversy aside and allow the music to take centre stage.

“I leave whatever things were created, I put them aside,” he said.

‘I want tomorrow to be just music’

Reflecting on his three decades in music, Remos said the concert will bring together some of the most important moments of his career.

His journey has included performances in nightclubs and theatres, major concerts and collaborations with some of Greece’s leading artists and composers.

“I really have unique and rare moments to remember over these thirty years,” he said.

Remos plans to bring many of those memories together during the approximately three hour performance.

“We will try to squeeze all of this together into these three hours. Three hours of music and only music,” he said.

He also made clear what he wants audiences to experience on Saturday night.

“I want tomorrow to be just music. For the words to stop, for all of us to finish talking and for the music to begin. And then, on Monday, things will return to their normal place,” Remos said.

Remos addresses controversy over statue

Remos also addressed discussion surrounding a statue at the concert venue, insisting that no structure has been placed on it or altered it.

“And the statue is in place. The statue, I mean, has no structure resting on it. So, let’s emphasise that,” he said.

He ended with a message directed towards the audience and the reaction expected inside the venue.

“From there on, any reactions will be seen in the applause.”
