Greek Artists Mourn the Death of Singer Giorgos Mazonakis

The death of beloved Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has sent shockwaves through Greece’s entertainment industry, with fellow artists, friends and former collaborators sharing emotional tributes online.

Mazonakis, who dominated the Greek music scene for more than three decades, forged a distinctive career and left his own mark on Greek music. His recognisable voice, unique stage presence and unmistakable style earned him a devoted following throughout his career.

Following news of his death at the age of 54, social media filled with messages from singers, actors and other figures from Greek music and television, who shared memories and said goodbye to the much-loved performer.

Greek artists pay tribute

Television presenter and radio personality Grigoris Arnaoutoglou wrote about the sudden loss: “Safe travels, George… wherever you are going, may your soul find peace.”

Television presenter Katerina Kainourgiou shared a photograph of herself with Mazonakis and wrote an emotional tribute, recalling the man behind the celebrated performer.

“From today, ‘Small Hours’ will have a different silence… and ‘where you are missed, it fell heavy’ will no longer be just a lyric,” she wrote.

Kainourgiou said she had the opportunity to know Mazonakis, even if only briefly, as a person rather than simply as a major artist.

She described him as talented, multifaceted, sensitive, unpredictable and authentic, adding that he was the kind of personality who left a lasting mark wherever he went.

“You were a real star. Not because the lights, the stages or your successes said so, but because you had that rare quality that cannot be taught or manufactured… brilliance,” she wrote.

“You will be missed, our Giorgo. Safe travels.”

Veteran singer Anna Vissi also shared an image of Mazonakis, writing: “I have no words, only deep sadness.”

Nikos Mouratidis recalls his struggles

Manager and radio producer Nikos Mouratidis also spoke about difficulties Mazonakis had faced over many years.

Speaking on Alpha television, Mouratidis said the singer had battled fears for decades.

“Giorgos had so many fears from the beginning. He would wake up suddenly at night. When we were travelling, he would come and knock on my hotel-room door,” Mouratidis said.

“For the last 30 years, he was not well and everyone hid it, so that we wouldn’t say exaggerated or irrelevant things,” he added.

Artists remember a unique performer

Singer Kostas Martakis shared a tribute referencing one of Mazonakis’ songs.

“And today, more than ever… God is missing again,” he wrote.

Television presenter Natalia Germanou reposted a photograph showing herself in Mazonakis’ arms.

“You lived as you wanted, you leave far too soon, I will always have you here,” she wrote across the photograph. Her caption contained a single word: “You stood out.”

Singer Michalis Hatzigiannis said he struggled to find words to describe his grief.

The two artists had shared music, songs, moments, laughter and anxieties, he wrote, adding that he had the privilege of hearing some of his own songs take on Mazonakis’ voice and become his.

“You were unique. Authentic, unpredictable, generous, incomparable,” Hatzigiannis wrote.

“You were a person unlike anyone else and a voice where one word was enough to know who was singing.”

Singer Christos Dantis wrote: “The way you served the art of song, anarchically, is how I will remember you, Giorgos. I can’t write anything else, I’m frozen… Safe travels, my boy… MAZO.”

Journalist and television presenter Antonis Sroiter wrote: “Perhaps the only artist I considered a friend of mine. Goodbye, Giorgo.”

Actress Nena Chronopoulou described Mazonakis as both a “great artist” and a “good person”.

She wrote that, amid the everyday noise and arguments on social media, his death had brought everything into perspective.

“Enough with the rest of the comments, guys… Now heads down,” she wrote, calling Mazonakis a “good soul” and wishing him a safe journey.

Young singer Anastasia shared one of the most personal tributes, referring to Mazonakis respectfully as “Mr Giorgo”.

“I don’t know what to write… I don’t know what to say… Whatever I say seems too little,” she wrote.

Anastasia said Mazonakis had played a major role at the beginning of her career, describing him as her first step, first opportunity and first support as she entered the music industry.

“I was probably very blessed that at the beginning of this journey, you were there,” she wrote. “A huge school for me. A person who left things inside me that will never fade.”

She said she did not want to say goodbye because, for her, Mazonakis would never truly leave.

“You will always live here… in my soul, my life and my mind,” she wrote.

Anastasia remembered his presence and charisma, describing him as a “self-luminous star” who needed nothing around him to shine.

“You entered a room and filled it simply with your presence,” she wrote.

“I will never forget what we shared. I will never forget what you gave me. I will never forget you.”

She ended her tribute by calling Mazonakis a legend.

“You will always be a part of my beginning. And a part of my heart. I love you forever. No one can forget you… you wrote your own story… Legend.”
