Severe flooding hit Eastern Mani on Saturday afternoon after heavy rainfall caused widespread problems across the region, prompting the Fire Service to rescue people trapped in vehicles.

The Fire Service Operations Centre received 50 calls for assistance from around 4:30pm on August 15, 2026. Firefighters had so far rescued 10 people from vehicles and moved them to safety.

The areas most affected included Oitylo, Neo Oitylo, Alypa, Kokkala and Exo Nymfio, based on the calls received by the Fire Service.

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), Deputy Mayor Georgia Lyrofonni said the settlements of Oitylo, Karavostasi, Alypa, Limeni and Portokagio experienced serious flooding.

She said several drivers travelling on the local road network had to seek assistance after the flooding affected their routes, with rescuers eventually moving them to safety.

Rain continued to fall in the area, while flood debris blocked roads at several locations.

According to Lyrofonni, heavy machinery was expected to begin clearing and restoring the affected areas, followed by a full assessment of the damage.

“An Unprecedented Situation for Our Area”

Eastern Mani’s Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Giorgos Exarchakos, described the flooding as “unprecedented” in comments to ANA-MPA.

“This is an unprecedented situation for our area,” he said, adding that the communities of Nymfi, Exonymfi, Kokkala and Lagia had suffered damage.

He reported significant damage to homes and, particularly, the road network, with some sections suffering major destruction.

“Fortunately, no people were endangered,” Exarchakos said.

Lyrofonni also reported damage in Oitylo, Karavostasi and Alypa, where authorities identified some of the most serious problems caused by the torrential rainfall.

Cars Swept Into the Sea

According to Lyrofonni, several cars were swept into the sea, while the flooding caused significant damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

She also said several residents had requested evacuation from affected areas.

Authorities arranged accommodation for those evacuated at the indoor sports hall in Areopoli.

The Fire Service and local authorities remain focused on assisting residents, clearing the road network and assessing the extent of the damage as rainfall continues.
