Kasidiaris Plans New Party ‘Alliance of Greeks’ After Prison Release

Former Golden Dawn MP Ilias Kasidiaris is preparing a new political project following his release from prison, with Greek media reporting that the emerging organisation is expected to be called “Alliance of Greeks” (Symmachia Ellinon).

Kasidiaris was released from Domokos Prison on September 15, 2026, after completing his sentence in connection with the Golden Dawn criminal organisation case. Following his release, he confirmed that he intended to return to active politics and spoke of a new “strong national party”.

The reported name of the new organisation has been circulating in Greek media since mid September. However, details about its formal structure and legal status remain subject to developments.

Three independent MPs linked to new project

The emerging political formation has also been linked to three independent MPs who were elected in 2023 with the Spartans before leaving the party: Giannis Dimitrokallis, Giorgos Manousos and Dionysis Valtogiannis.

ANT1 reported that the three lawmakers were moving towards the new political project, potentially giving it a parliamentary presence before the next national election.

Kathimerini reported that associates of Kasidiaris had been working on the creation of a new political organisation since at least 2025. According to sources cited by the newspaper, Dimitrokallis had taken steps towards establishing a party, while Manousos and Valtogiannis were also involved in the effort.

However, there is conflicting reporting over the legal status of the proposed party.

Sources close to Kasidiaris told Kathimerini that an application had been submitted to the Supreme Court for the establishment of a party expected to be called “Alliance of Greeks”. Judicial sources contacted by the newspaper, however, said the court had not received such an application from the three MPs.

Kasidiaris’ role

Reports indicate that Kasidiaris is not expected to appear as a parliamentary candidate for the new formation.

Instead, sources cited by Greek media say he could have a central political role while formally remaining outside the party.

Kathimerini reported that sources close to Kasidiaris described him as an “associate” rather than a formal member of the proposed party.

This distinction is significant because Greek electoral law contains restrictions concerning political parties whose leadership or actual direction is linked to individuals convicted of certain serious offences.

The Supreme Court previously blocked a political formation founded by Kasidiaris from participating in the 2023 elections, ruling that he remained its de facto leader despite being in prison.

Legal questions remain

Kasidiaris’ release from prison does not by itself settle whether a political organisation associated with him would be permitted to participate in future elections.

Under the legislation in force, the Supreme Court can bar parties from elections when their leadership or actual direction is linked to individuals convicted of specified serious offences, including leading a criminal organisation.

There are also differing legal interpretations regarding Kasidiaris’ own future electoral role. Kathimerini previously reported that constitutional experts had reached different conclusions over whether he could personally stand for election and under what circumstances.

The question of whether a new organisation would be considered legally independent of Kasidiaris could therefore become central to any application to participate in an election.

Kasidiaris announces political comeback

Upon leaving Domokos Prison, Kasidiaris told supporters and journalists that he was returning to what he described as the “front lines” of national political activity.

He also spoke of a new national party and said he intended to challenge the government at the political level.

Kasidiaris was a prominent figure in Golden Dawn, which was found by a Greek court in 2020 to operate as a criminal organisation. He was sentenced to 13½ years in prison in the landmark case.

His planned return comes as several political formations compete for support on the nationalist and right wing of Greek politics.

For now, the reported “Alliance of Greeks” remains an emerging political project rather than an established parliamentary party. Its final structure, leadership, programme and relationship with the three independent MPs will become clearer as the organisation formally presents itself.

The legal question surrounding Kasidiaris’ potential influence will also be closely watched, particularly given the Supreme Court’s previous decision to exclude a party associated with him from the 2023 election.
