US President Donald Trump was reportedly secretly transferred to a different aircraft during a recent trip from Turkey to Britain after US intelligence identified a credible Iranian threat against him or his aircraft, according to The Washington Post.
Trump was allegedly moved from the legacy Air Force One, a Boeing 747, to a C-32A transport aircraft in a covert operation. He reportedly left the 747 through an airport catering truck before boarding the C-32A, which then flew to Britain under the call sign “Reach 18.”
Meanwhile, the legacy Air Force One continued to Britain under the presidential “AF1” call sign, carrying journalists and White House staff who believed Trump was still aboard. The aircraft effectively served as a decoy.
The reported security measure came amid renewed US strikes on Iran and concerns that Trump or the presidential aircraft could be targeted.
The newer Qatari-provided Boeing 747-8 may also have played a role in the decision. The aircraft reportedly lacks some of the defensive countermeasures installed on the older presidential aircraft.
Perhaps most strikingly, the deception reportedly extended beyond the public. Some White House personnel and members of the press travelling with the presidential entourage were allegedly unaware that Trump had switched aircraft.
The episode highlights the extraordinary security measures surrounding the US president amid heightened tensions with Iran.
