Greece Issues ‘Very High’ Wildfire Risk Alert for Attica, Peloponnese, Aegean Islands and Crete

Greek authorities have placed large parts of the country under a “very high” wildfire risk alert for Monday, one level below a full state of emergency.

The Level 4 warning covers Attica, parts of the Peloponnese, the Aegean islands and Crete.

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has urged residents and visitors to avoid any activities that could spark fires, including the burning of dry grass, branches or other waste. Field burning remains strictly prohibited throughout the current fire-prevention period.

A wildfire broke out earlier on Sunday in Koropi, Attica, where firefighters, aircraft and helicopters continue to battle the blaze amid ongoing heatwave conditions.

According to the National Observatory of Athens, more than 110,000 acres (44,500 hectares) of land burned in the Attica region alone between 31 July and 4 August during the recent heatwave.

Across Europe, 1,237,645 acres (500,852 hectares) have already burned since the start of the year, with 1,528 fires detected by 6 August, according to the European Forest Fire Information System.
