Syros Bans Protest Against Israeli Cruise Ship Crown Iris

by · Greek City Times

Greek authorities have banned a planned demonstration against the Israeli-owned cruise ship Crown Iris on the island of Syros, citing security concerns and the risk of clashes as the vessel prepares to dock in Ermoupoli.

The Hellenic Coast Guard announced the restrictions on Monday, November 2, ahead of the ship’s scheduled arrival on Tuesday morning, November 3.

According to Kathimerini, authorities said the planned demonstration could threaten public safety, disrupt port operations and affect the island’s economic activity.

The Crown Iris, owned by Israeli company Mano Maritime, is scheduled to remain in Syros from 9 am until 5 pm as part of an Aegean cruise itinerary. The vessel can accommodate approximately 2,000 passengers and 650 crew members.

Protest organised in support of Palestinians

The Syros Anti-War Initiative had called for a demonstration along the waterfront in Ermoupoli, shortly before the cruise ship’s expected arrival.

Organisers said the protest was intended to express solidarity with Palestinians and other populations affected by the conflict in the Middle East.

The group also criticised Israel’s military operations in Gaza, launched following the Hamas-led attacks against Israel on October 7, 2023.

Coast Guard cites risk of confrontation

In announcing the restrictions, the Coast Guard warned that holding the demonstration at the proposed waterfront location could create security risks, including potential confrontations between protesters and cruise ship passengers.

Authorities also pointed to possible threats to human life and property, alongside concerns about the safe operation of the port and disruption to the island’s social and economic activities.

However, the restrictions do not rule out demonstrations altogether. Authorities indicated that protests could still take place at alternative locations away from the waterfront.

Previous Crown Iris visits also sparked protests

The Crown Iris has previously faced demonstrations during visits to Syros, with authorities introducing similar restrictions amid concerns about possible confrontations.

The protests have attracted political attention in Greece, particularly amid wider disagreements over demonstrations targeting Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The latest decision has once again brought the competing issues of public security, tourism and the right to peaceful protest into focus.
