Greece is bracing for a spell of severe weather on Sunday, with locally heavy rain, thunderstorms, possible hail and gale force winds expected across several regions.

The National Meteorological Service has issued an orange warning and updated its Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin based on the latest forecast data.

Where severe weather is expected

According to the latest forecast, locally heavy rain and thunderstorms, with a possibility of hail, are expected in:

  • Eastern Thessaly, particularly Magnesia
  • The Sporades
  • Western Crete
  • The western Cyclades

These conditions are expected to continue through the morning.

Evia is also expected to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms, with the unsettled weather forecast to persist until the afternoon.

At the same time, northeasterly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort are expected across the central and northern Aegean, creating potentially difficult conditions at sea.

Authorities urge caution

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has urged residents and visitors to exercise particular caution and take measures to protect themselves from the risks associated with severe weather.

State services, regions and municipalities have been placed on increased civil protection alert so they can respond quickly to any problems caused by the weather.

Residents are advised to remain informed through the National Meteorological Service’s regular weather updates and to follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Information on road conditions, including possible flooding and restrictions caused by floodwaters, is available through the Hellenic Police.

Further information and self protection guidance is available through the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.
