Western Australia has added a historic Northbridge block to the State Register of Heritage Places for its role as a hub for interwar Greek migrants.

The precinct sits on Aberdeen and William streets. It takes in three Victorian and Federation-era houses that Greek families have owned and lived in since the 1930s, and the Kakulas Brothers continental grocery, which opened in 1929. The shop has changed over time but still reads as a small community store. The family still runs it on the original site — a rare case, the listing says, of more than 90 years under the founders’ line.

In the interwar years many newcomers from Greece and southern Europe settled in Northbridge. The grocery made the corner more useful: familiar food, a meeting point, a business that lasted.

Heritage Minister Simone McGurk said migrants built the state’s mix of cultures and that Northbridge holds that story. Greek families made the area home between the wars. Together with the nearby Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helene, the Kakulas shop and the Greek houses, she said, show that experience. The register is meant to keep it standing.
