An era ends for New York’s Greek diaspora. The historic Lefkos Pirgos pastry and coffee shop officially changed hands on Sunday, October 4, 2026, concluding 58 years of family ownership by the beloved Pantazis family.
The iconic establishment, a staple of Ditmars Boulevard, has been sold to another Greek-American businessman who plans to preserve the shop’s historic legacy.
A Pillar of Astoria’s Greek-American History
Named after Thessaloniki’s famous White Tower, Lefkos Pirgos opened its doors nearly six decades ago. Since then, it has evolved into a vital cultural hub for the Greek community in Queens. Under the dedicated stewardship of matriarch Giouly (Julie) Pantazi and her family, the cafe became a home away from home for generations of immigrants and locals alike.
For decades, the shop has been renowned for serving the best traditional Greek desserts in Astoria, including:
- Galaktoboureko (custard baked in phyllo)
- Kataifi and Baklava
- Tsoureki (traditional Greek Easter bread)
- Authentic Greek frappes and espresso
Beyond its menu, Lefkos Pirgos was a neighbourhood institution. Greek immigrants gathered to debate politics, families celebrated milestones, and international dignitaries stopped by for an authentic taste of Greece in New York City.
An Emotional Farewell on Ditmars Boulevard
The final week of the Pantazis family’s operation brought an outpouring of emotion from the Astoria community. Longtime patrons packed the cafe to share decades of memories, shed tears, and offer heartfelt goodbyes to the family who poured their hearts into the neighbourhood for 58 years.
While the ownership is changing, the Pantazis family’s contribution to the cultural fabric of Queens remains unforgettable. As Astoria continues to undergo rapid gentrification, the sale of Lefkos Pirgos marks a poignant shift in the landscape of one of America’s most famous ethnic enclaves.
