Athens Residents in Fear After Rise in Robberies and Assaults
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesRobberies, assaults and gang clashes are raising safety concerns across central Athens, prompting Greece’s Ministry of Citizen Protection to introduce a new policing plan. Residents say they increasingly fear walking through the city’s streets as incidents of theft and violence continue to trouble local neighbourhoods.
Greek broadcaster MEGA has released CCTV footage documenting incidents in several parts of the capital, including a robbery in Kolonos and a street fight in Victoria Square.
Shortly after 9 pm in Kolonos, two women walked along the street under an umbrella as three young men followed them.
Footage shows one of the men, wearing a white hoodie, approaching the women closely and pulling up his hood while the other two followed at a brisk pace.
A short time later, the men allegedly attacked the women and forcibly took their mobile phones and money. Authorities have identified all three suspects, but police have yet to arrest them.
In Agios Panteleimonas, MEGA cameras recorded police officers checking two men outside the Church of Saint Panteleimon. A short time later, officers asked the men to accompany them to the police station.
Residents in central Athens say the situation has become dangerous, with thefts reportedly increasing.
Security cameras in Victoria Square captured a violent confrontation between rival groups of foreign nationals, who exchanged blows in the middle of the street as frightened bystanders watched.
The footage has added to concerns among residents about public safety in central Athens.
Greece’s Ministry of Citizen Protection plans to station a team from specialised police units permanently in Victoria Square every night from 10 pm to 6 am. The team will respond immediately to incidents and emergencies.
Authorities will also implement the new policing plan in several other areas, including the Acropolis, Omonia, Agios Panteleimonas, Kolonos, Kypseli and Patissia.
The plan aims to strengthen public safety and reduce crime across the capital.
