August Begins with the Dormition Fast: The “Summer Pascha” of the Orthodox Church

The first day of August marks the beginning of the Dormition Fast, a 15-day period of spiritual preparation dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Panagia), the Holy Mother of God.

Often described as the “Pascha of the Summer” or “Summer Pascha”, the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is one of the most significant celebrations in the Orthodox calendar. Just as Pascha (Easter) means “to pass over,” this period offers the faithful an opportunity to renew their spiritual strength through fasting, prayer and reflection.

The 15-Day Fast

From August 1 until August 15 (known as Dekapentavgousto), many Orthodox Christians observe a fast similar to the Great Lent before Easter. The fast culminates on August 15, the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, when the Church commemorates the falling asleep of the Virgin Mary and the reception of her soul and body into heaven.

On this day, special Lamentations are chanted — similar to those of Good Friday — expressing the sorrow and love of the faithful for the Mother of God. According to Church teaching, the feast affirms that the Theotokos is alive and continues to intercede for all.

A Parallel with Easter

The Dormition period shares several similarities with Holy Week and Pascha. It also has an apodosis (leave-taking), which continues for nine days after the main feast, just as the celebration of the Resurrection extends for 39 days.

There is also a meaningful contrast between the two “Paschas.” During Great Lent, the Marian feast of the Annunciation provides a joyful interruption. During the Dormition Fast, the Despotic feast of the Transfiguration of the Savior (August 6) serves a similar role, reminding the faithful that the ultimate goal of life is spiritual transformation and entry into the Kingdom of God.

The Role of the Theotokos

While only Jesus Christ is the Savior, the Virgin Mary holds a unique place as the one who intercedes for the salvation of the faithful. Through her prayers, she helps believers “pass over” toward forgiveness and redemption. Her Dormition reminds the Church that what appears to be an end is in fact a joyful and eternal beginning.

The rich hymnography of these days, along with the countless miracles attributed to her intercession, continue to strengthen the faith of Orthodox Christians worldwide.
