Six newborn puppies survived a horrific act of animal cruelty in Vranas, Ilia, after an unidentified person allegedly took them from their stray mother, sealed them inside a plastic bag and threw them into a recycling bin.

A volunteer’s timely intervention saved the puppies from a slow and painful death, while footage from the rescue captured the emotional reunion between the newborns and their mother.

Volunteer finds puppies inside sealed bag

The rescue began when Gianna, an active volunteer from Vartholomio, learned that abandoned puppies were inside a recycling bin.

She immediately went to the location and carefully searched through the bin. She soon discovered a tied plastic bag containing the six helpless puppies, who were crying desperately for help.

The volunteer immediately removed the puppies from the bag and contacted police so authorities could document the serious offence, which now carries felony-level penalties under Greek law.

Mother dog reunites with her puppies

During the rescue, witnesses saw an emotional scene that was also captured on video.

The puppies’ stray mother had been desperately searching around the bin for her babies. As soon as she heard their cries, she rushed towards them.

With remarkable tenderness, the mother dog gently picked up one of her puppies in her mouth and tried to carry it away from the area, refusing to leave her family behind.

Family finds safety as volunteers seek support

The four-legged family eventually reached a safe environment and now receives temporary care from a local volunteer who looks after dozens of stray animals despite facing personal and financial difficulties.

The newborn puppies and their mother now need ongoing support, including specialised food, vaccinations and veterinary care.

They also need permanent homes where they can live safely together or, where appropriate, find caring families willing to give them a secure and loving future.
