Greece has been named the world’s best country for 2026 by readers of renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller, which targets some of the world’s most influential travel markets.
Greece came close to a perfect score in the influential magazine’s annual readers’ poll, earning 98.14 out of 100 and ranking ahead of established destinations such as Italy, Spain, France and Türkiye.
“Our love affair with Greece has reached its peak, and you, the readers of Condé Nast Traveller, have named it the best country in the world for 2026,” the magazine states, celebrating Greece’s natural beauty for a discerning international travel audience.
The publication notes that Greece “attracts record-breaking numbers of tourists”, yet this has not discouraged voters from placing the country at the top of their rankings.
“The crystal-clear waters of the Aegean call us back to some of our favourite islands in the world: Santorini, whose perfection resembles a postcard; Mykonos, steeped in mythology; and vast Crete, whose wine scene is once again emerging,” Condé Nast Traveller writes.
“The list of dream islands continues to expand as more visitors explore lesser-known Paros, car-free Hydra, mysterious Ios and windswept Tinos,” the magazine adds.
However, the publication looks beyond Greece’s islands and gives particular attention to Athens, recommending that readers visit the Greek capital.
Condé Nast Traveller observes that the historic city has moved beyond the era of the economic crisis and now displays a “combative, creative energy”. This transformation has brought “pioneering restaurants, avant-garde exhibition spaces and fashionable hotels” to the forefront, helping Athens emerge as one of Europe’s unexpectedly “coolest” capitals.
