Greek Americans in Congress: Pappas wins Senate seat as House members return
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesDemocrat Chris Pappas captured New Hampshire’s open Senate seat, becoming the first Greek American elected to the Senate since Olympia Snowe left office in January 2013. He defeated former Republican Sen. John Sununu, who also has Greek ancestry through his father’s side. The seat was vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.
In the House, Florida’s Greek-American Republicans all retained their seats. Gus Bilirakis won an 11th term. Mike Haridopolos secured his first full term and chairs the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee. Jimmy Patronis, a former state CFO who first entered Congress via the April 2025 special election to replace Matt Gaetz, also won reelection.
Elsewhere, Republican Nicole Malliotakis of New York, daughter of a Greek immigrant father and Cuban mother, claimed a fourth House term. Democrats Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire and Dina Titus of Nevada were also reelected, though CNN noted Titus’s result was still awaiting final verification.
With control of Congress shifting, the four Republicans will serve in the House minority in the new session, while the Democrats join the majority.
