Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Surry Hills, Sydney, celebrated the feast of its patron saint, Saint Sophia, and her three daughters, Faith, Hope and Love, on 17 September with services attended by hierarchs, clergy and members of the parish community.

The celebrations brought together the parish in prayer and fellowship, highlighting both its Orthodox Christian faith and its ongoing commitment to community service.

His Grace Bishop Christodoulos presided over the Vespers service, while His Grace Bishop Iakovos presided over the Divine Liturgy and feast day celebrations.

The majority of the parish priests from the Sydney district also attended both services, adding to the significance of the celebrations for the local community.

A growing parish in the heart of Surry Hills

Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, located at 411A Bourke Street, Surry Hills, has continued to grow despite serving an area with a relatively small Greek population.

The parish now welcomes more than 200 people to an average Sunday Divine Liturgy.

The growing congregation reflects the commitment of parishioners, clergy and volunteers, while the parish’s activities extend beyond worship and into practical service for the wider community.

Through its outreach initiatives, the parish seeks to put Christian teachings into practice through compassion, generosity and assistance to people experiencing hardship.

Feed the People serves thousands

One of the parish’s main outreach initiatives is its Feed the People programme, which provides food and essential items to people and families facing hardship.

The programme operates at several locations, including Martin Place in Sydney, outside the parish in Surry Hills, Eddie Ward Park in Surry Hills and Green Park in Darlinghurst.

Every Monday evening, volunteers distribute more than 2,000 meals, along with toiletries, canned food, fresh vegetables, fruit and clothing.

Donors, benefactors, corporate supporters and volunteers help sustain the programme and its weekly distribution efforts.

The parish also operates a food pantry every Wednesday from 4.30pm to 7pm.

During these sessions, volunteers distribute more than 100 crates containing vegetables, fruit and other essential food supplies provided through the programme’s network of supporters.

The parish describes the initiative as an expression of its Christian commitment to caring for people in need and ensuring that those experiencing hardship receive practical support.

Plans to restore the historic church

The growing parish is also preparing for major renovations to its historic church.

The parish currently awaits approval from the Heritage Council for a restoration project that aims to preserve the building’s architectural heritage while returning it to its former appearance.

The proposed work includes restoring the facade to its original sandstone appearance and reinstating spheres and other architectural features associated with the church’s original design.

The parish considers the project an effort to preserve its spiritual and cultural heritage for future generations while maintaining the church as a place of worship, welcome and community service.

The story of Saint Sophia and her daughters

The feast commemorates Saint Sophia and her three daughters, Faith, Hope and Love, whose story has become associated with courage, sacrifice and steadfast Christian faith.

According to Christian tradition, Sophia was a mother from Italy who raised her three daughters in the Christian faith.

During a period of persecution, the three children faced demands to renounce their belief in Christ. Faith, Hope and Love refused to deny their faith and were ultimately martyred.

Tradition holds that Sophia endured the loss of all three daughters and mourned at their graves for three days, praying to be reunited with them.

She later reposed in peace, having remained faithful to Christ and to the memory of her children.

Their story continues to serve as an example of spiritual courage, sacrifice and love, reminding the faithful that Christian faith finds expression not only in words but also through actions, sacrifice and care for others.

A parish built on faith, hope and love

The Saint Sophia community marked this year’s feast by giving thanks for the presence of its hierarchs and clergy and for the continued dedication of parishioners and volunteers.

The parish continues to combine its liturgical life with practical community service, from the celebration of the Divine Liturgy to the distribution of thousands of meals each week.
