Jordan Tightens Security After Deadly Attack on Greek Orthodox Church

by · Greek City Times

Jordan has increased security around shopping centres, foreign embassies and other locations after a gun attack on a Greek Orthodox church killed seven people and injured dozens during a funeral.

Security has been stepped up across Jordan following a deadly shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in the southern governorate of Karak, which authorities have condemned as a terrorist attack.

The US Embassy in Amman announced the heightened security measures after gunmen opened fire during a funeral on Friday, October 23, killing seven people and injuring dozens more, according to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate.

Authorities are continuing to search for the attackers. No group has claimed responsibility, and officials have not confirmed whether the suspects have links to Islamist militant organisations operating inside or outside Jordan.

Jordanian leaders condemn attack

Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan condemned the violence, blaming terrorist ideology and extremism.

“We will not allow society to go down this path,” Hassan said in a statement posted on social media.

King Abdullah II visited Karak following the attack and vowed that those responsible would face severe consequences, warning they would be punished with an “iron fist”.

The attack has raised concerns over security in a country where such incidents are considered rare. Jordanian authorities have previously said they foiled attempted attacks by Islamist militants.

Christians among Jordan’s minority communities

Christians make up a minority of Jordan’s population, which is predominantly Muslim. The country is home to significant Christian communities and numerous biblical sites visited by pilgrims from around the world.

The shooting at the Greek Orthodox church has prompted renewed concern for the safety of Christian worshippers and religious communities in the region.

The US Embassy’s warning highlights the increased security measures now in place following the attack, although authorities have not publicly identified a confirmed motive or established links to any particular militant group.
