The United States has approved a possible $101 million Foreign Military Sales package for Greece focused on the maintenance, repair and operational support of aircraft already serving with the Hellenic Air Force.

The approval by the US State Department does not involve the purchase of new aircraft. Instead, the package is designed to help Greece sustain the availability of its existing fleet through access to spare parts, components, consumables, repairs and technical support.

According to the US notification, the proposed package includes aircraft components, spare parts and accessories, consumables, as well as repair and return services.

Focus on keeping Greek aircraft operational

The package would also provide engineering services and technical and logistical support from the US government and American contractors.

The objective is to strengthen Greece’s ability to maintain and operate its existing aircraft fleet, ensuring that aircraft can return to service more quickly when repairs or maintenance are required.

The US government has previously described Greece as a key NATO ally and highlighted the importance of military cooperation between the two countries. US security cooperation has included the upgrade of Greek F-16s to the F-16V configuration and other aviation programmes.

The latest package is therefore focused on sustainment rather than adding a new aircraft type to the Greek inventory.

$101 million is an estimated maximum value

The $101 million figure represents the estimated maximum value of the potential sale at this stage, rather than a confirmed final contract price.

The US announcement does not identify a prime contractor. Any contractors would be selected through the appropriate US procurement procedures, including requests for proposals.

The final scope of services and capabilities would be determined during the contracting process.

Any agreement concerning compensatory or industrial benefits would also be negotiated directly between Greece and the selected contractor.

No additional US personnel planned

The proposed programme does not envisage the deployment of additional US government or contractor personnel to Greece.

The US assessment also states that the potential sale would not adversely affect US defence readiness.

Washington says the proposed sale would support US foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the defence capabilities of a NATO ally and contributing to political and economic stability in Europe.

The notification also states that the proposed sale is not expected to alter the basic military balance in the region.

For Greece, the package would provide additional access to US technical support, spare parts and repair services aimed at keeping its existing air fleet operational.
