Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Celebrates 35 Years of Priesthood in Constantinople
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesThe Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople has marked 35 years of the priesthood of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with celebrations bringing together clergy, pilgrims and members of the Greek Orthodox community from around the world.
The anniversary at the Phanar was marked by solemn religious services and expressions of devotion to the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Christian world, whose patriarchal ministry has spanned more than three decades.
Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni paid tribute to Patriarch Bartholomew’s international influence, his commitment to Orthodox Christian tradition and his efforts to strengthen the global role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Mendoni highlighted the Patriarch’s longstanding commitment to environmental protection, noting that he had championed the protection of the natural world long before climate change became one of the defining challenges of the modern era.

She said his work connected environmental responsibility with social justice, moral duty and the obligation to protect the planet for future generations.
Imvros Holds Special Place in Patriarch’s Journey
Mendoni also highlighted the special significance of Imvros, the island where Patriarch Bartholomew was born, describing its revival as an important example of the enduring power of historical memory, education and culture.
Through the Patriarch’s personal interest and continued support, Imvros has experienced renewed hope, with efforts to preserve its Greek heritage and strengthen its cultural and educational life.
Greek Australian Children Travel to Constantinople
Among the most moving moments of the celebrations was the participation of approximately 100 children who travelled from Sydney and Melbourne to Constantinople.
Organised by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, the young participants presented a cultural and religious programme featuring songs, dances and other performances celebrating their Greek Orthodox faith and heritage.
Their presence highlighted the enduring connection between the Greek diaspora in Australia and the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople.
Thousands of kilometres from their homeland, the children demonstrated how Greek language, Orthodox Christianity and Hellenic cultural traditions continue to be passed on to younger generations.
The anniversary served not only as a tribute to Patriarch Bartholomew’s 35 years of priesthood, but also as a powerful expression of the worldwide Orthodox community’s devotion to its spiritual heritage.
