Several Asian countries have tightened health and quarantine controls at their borders with Russia following reports of a possible plague case in Siberia.

The measures come after a 28 year old employee of the Irkutsk Anti Plague Research Institute died after developing pneumonia of unknown origin. Russian authorities have not confirmed that she had pneumonic plague, but dozens of people have been quarantined and nearly 200 contacts placed under medical observation.

🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan has placed sanitary and quarantine checkpoints across the country on heightened alert. Officials are checking people, vehicles and cargo crossing the state border to prevent the introduction and spread of particularly dangerous infections.

🇰🇿 Kazakhstan has increased monitoring of the epidemiological situation in Russia’s Irkutsk region and strengthened precautionary health measures amid reports of a suspected dangerous infectious disease.

🇺🇿 Uzbekistan has also introduced preventive measures aimed at preventing the importation of particularly dangerous infections.

🇲🇳 Mongolia has reportedly increased vigilance in areas bordering Russia, although details of the measures remain limited.

The heightened controls follow growing international concern over the unexplained death and reports that the woman worked with plague pathogens at the Siberian research institute.

Russian health authorities continue to insist that there is no confirmed evidence linking her death to plague exposure and have urged the public to rely on official information rather than unverified reports.

The situation remains under investigation.
