US President Donald Trump will award Elon Musk the National Medal of Science later today, a White House spokesperson told Agence France-Presse, marking a renewed closeness between the two men after their public dispute last year.
Musk, the head of Tesla and SpaceX, will receive the honour alongside Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google co-founder Sergey Brin and AMD CEO Lisa Su at a ceremony in Washington.
Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell and Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella will also receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation at the same event.
“The Trump administration is grateful for the contributions of these incredible leaders,” White House spokesperson Liz Houston said in a statement obtained by AFP.
The White House also recalled that Trump’s uncle, John G. Trump, received the National Medal of Science in 1983. The president has repeatedly expressed pride in that family legacy.
In a recent interview, Trump said he owed his high “intelligence quotient”, which he often boasts about, to his uncle, a physicist who taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Musk became one of Trump’s leading supporters during the presidential campaign and contributed substantial financial backing. After the Republican returned to power, Trump tasked him with drastically cutting US government spending.
For months, Musk maintained a prominent presence at the White House.
However, the two men became embroiled in a public dispute at the beginning of summer 2025 after Musk criticised Trump’s fiscal policies.
The billionaire entrepreneur subsequently moved closer to the Trump administration again.
More recently, the Pentagon, which has signed major contracts with Musk’s companies, assigned him a mission to identify technologies and weapons that the United States will need in future wars.
Musk also joined executives from major artificial intelligence companies who signed an AI “code of ethics” at the White House last week.
