Israeli Ambassador Rejects Turkey-Libya Maritime Deal, Backs Greece

by · Greek City Times

Israel’s Ambassador to Greece, Pninat Yanai, has unequivocally condemned the Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum, declaring that it has no legal validity and affirming Israel’s respect for Greece’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and international law.

In a post on X late on Saturday, Yanai and the Israeli Embassy in Athens stressed that the agreement between Turkey and Libya lacks legal basis, validity and legitimacy.

Their statements included a video excerpt from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s address at a high-level open debate organised under Greece’s presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

The debate focused on Maintaining International Peace and Security: Emerging Technologies and Maritime Security.

In the video, Mitsotakis said: “Geography cannot be rewritten. And sovereign rights cannot be erased by drawing arbitrary lines on a map.”

In their joint message, the Israeli ambassador and embassy explained that Turkey and Libya had attempted to establish maritime boundaries through their agreement while disregarding the maritime rights of Greek islands, including Crete and Rhodes.

They described the two islands as particularly popular holiday destinations among Israelis.

“Israel strongly condemns this agreement and considers it to lack legal basis, validity and legitimacy,” the statement said.

It added that Israel fully respects Greece’s sovereignty and sovereign rights, as well as the principles of international law.

“No agreement between two countries can undermine the legitimate rights of a third country,” the statement concluded.
