Attica remains on high alert for wildfires today, August 16, as authorities place several regions across Greece under Red Code, with the fire danger rated at Category 4.

Attica, including Kythira, Boeotia, Evia, including Skyros, the Cyclades and the entire Region of Crete face a very high risk of wildfire.

According to the Daily Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, authorities have placed all of these areas under Red Code.

Municipalities and regional authorities in the affected areas have been called to immediately convene their civil protection coordination bodies to review preparedness measures and plans for dealing with potential wildfires.

Red Code also requires the full mobilisation of available personnel in municipalities and regions, along with the deployment of the necessary resources to tackle potential forest fires.

Civil Protection Mechanism on Alert

The Fire Service remains at the second stage of operational readiness, while authorities have increased aerial surveillance and patrols involving fire, police and military forces.

Fire Service personnel in high-risk areas remain on partial alert so they can respond immediately to increased operational demands that may arise.

Authorities have also activated the Civil Protection Action Plan for managing wildfire risks. The plan allows authorities to impose preventive restrictions on vehicle access and visitor presence in national parks, forests and other vulnerable areas.

Authorities Urge Public to Exercise Extreme Caution

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has urged residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution and avoid outdoor activities that could accidentally trigger a wildfire.

Authorities advise the public to avoid burning dry grass, branches and garden waste, as well as using equipment that can generate sparks, including circular saws and welding equipment.

People should also avoid using outdoor barbecues and smoking bees. Authorities have also urged particular caution when disposing of lit cigarettes.

The General Secretariat reminded the public that field burning remains prohibited throughout the fire-prevention season.
