Greek Consul Rejects Turkish Aegean Claims at Istanbul OXI Day Event
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesGreece’s Consul General in Istanbul, Ambassador Konstantinos Koutras, criticised Turkey’s maritime claims and the Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum during a speech marking Greece’s October 28 national anniversary, arguing that Turkish claims over the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone (EEZ) rights of Greek islands lack a basis in international law.
Koutras also criticised the eastern Libyan parliament’s approval of the Turkey-Libya memorandum, which concerns maritime boundaries between Turkey and Libya.
The Greek diplomat drew a connection between Turkey’s policy during the Second World War and the current positions of some allies towards Greece and Cyprus, although the statement provided no further details about the comparison.
