UK Police Re-Arrest Two Men Over Suspected Iranian Links

by · Greek City Times

British counter-terrorism police have re-arrested two men initially questioned during an investigation into an incident near RAF Fairford, a military airbase in south-west England. The suspects now face suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, with authorities confirming that the investigation concerns Iran.

The suspects are a 24-year-old British citizen and a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national.

Police said officers arrested the first man outside the military installation in the early hours of 27 September, while they had previously arrested the second man in London. Authorities released both men during the initial investigation before re-arresting them.

Lawrence Taylor, a senior counter-terrorism officer, said the investigation remains ongoing and that police continue to gather evidence.

“We believe it is highly likely that the Iranian state is involved,” Taylor said, while stressing that authorities continue to assess the evidence.

Strategic Importance of RAF Fairford

The case has drawn particular attention because of RAF Fairford’s role in US military operations.

Located in Gloucestershire, the base has hosted American bombers, including B-1 aircraft, making it a strategically significant military installation.

According to statements attributed to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the incident under investigation may be linked to activities organised by Iran.

In an earlier statement, Burnham reportedly raised the possibility that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Islamic Republic’s powerful military organisation, had directed the suspected operation.

The case comes amid broader British concerns about potential foreign intelligence activity, particularly around military installations and infrastructure linked to allied operations.

However, the arrests do not in themselves prove espionage or Iranian state involvement. Investigators must assess the suspicions against the evidence gathered during the inquiry.

Tehran has rejected allegations of involvement, while British counter-terrorism police have not publicly disclosed all the evidence in the case.

The investigation continues, with authorities seeking specific evidence that could link the two men to Iranian intelligence services and the incident near RAF Fairford.
