Spotify is introducing a new “AI Persona” label that will help listeners identify artist profiles whose public identities may have been created using artificial intelligence.

The new labels are expected to begin appearing on selected artist profiles from mid September 2026, as Spotify expands its efforts to provide greater transparency around AI generated content and identities.

The “AI Persona” badge will indicate that an artist’s identity may have been created by AI and does not represent a real person. The label will appear in the banner and About section of artist profiles, as well as in search results and alongside tracks appearing in playlists.

Spotify says the move follows feedback from listeners who have expressed frustration at discovering that an artist profile that appeared to represent a real person was actually an AI generated persona.

How Spotify will identify AI artists

Artists will be able to voluntarily disclose that their profile represents an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists.

However, Spotify says it will not rely solely on self disclosure. Its review teams will also examine artist profiles and identify those whose public identity, including their name and imagery, appears to represent a photorealistic AI generated identity. The company plans to initially focus on artists who meet certain audience thresholds.

Artists whose profiles are labelled by Spotify will be notified and given an opportunity to either disclose themselves as an AI Persona or appeal the decision.

Spotify also plans to introduce a system allowing listeners to report profiles they believe represent AI Personas.

AI music is not the same as an AI artist

Spotify is making an important distinction between an AI generated artist identity and music that has been created with the help of artificial intelligence.

The new badge is specifically about the artist’s public identity and whether it represents a real person. It does not indicate that every song released by that artist was created entirely by AI.

Spotify already offers AI Credits and SongDNA to provide information about how music was created and how AI tools were used during the creative process.

The company says artists can use AI in a variety of ways, while the new AI Persona system is focused on making clear whether the person or identity presented to listeners actually exists.

AI Personas excluded from recommendations

Spotify will also limit the exposure of AI Personas through its recommendation systems.

By default, music from AI Personas will not appear in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic recommendations. Users who already follow an AI Persona may still receive its music in their personalized recommendations.

The company says the policy is designed to support authentic artists who are building careers while giving listeners more information about who is behind the music they discover.

The move comes as generative AI continues to reshape the music industry, creating new opportunities for artists while raising growing concerns over authenticity, impersonation and the increasing volume of AI generated music on streaming platforms.
