The reported detection of propofol in toxicology tests involving Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has raised further questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
The powerful intravenous anaesthetic is used in medical settings under close supervision because of its potential to suppress breathing and lower blood pressure.
According to a report published by Greek outlet Tilestwra on October 4, propofol was detected in Mazonakis’ system. The reported finding has renewed scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s final hours, as investigators examine the evidence in the case.
However, the precise findings of the toxicology tests and their significance in determining the cause of death should be established through official findings from the relevant authorities.
What is propofol?
Propofol is a fast acting intravenous anaesthetic used to induce and maintain general anaesthesia during surgery. It is also administered to sedate certain patients undergoing medical procedures or receiving intensive care.
The drug acts rapidly on the central nervous system, reducing consciousness within a short period after administration. Its effects can also wear off relatively quickly once administration stops, although recovery depends on several factors, including the dose and the patient’s condition.
Despite its widespread use in medicine, propofol requires careful administration by appropriately trained medical professionals with suitable monitoring and emergency equipment available.
Why can propofol be dangerous?
Propofol can cause serious complications, particularly when administered without appropriate medical supervision.
Potential risks include:
- Respiratory depression: The drug can slow or stop breathing, potentially depriving the body of oxygen.
- Severe hypotension: It can cause a significant drop in blood pressure, affecting the supply of blood to vital organs.
- Cardiovascular complications: In severe cases, it can contribute to dangerous changes in heart function and cardiac arrest.
Because these complications can develop rapidly, patients receiving propofol require appropriate monitoring and access to equipment and personnel capable of supporting breathing and circulation.
There is no specific antidote that reverses propofol’s effects. Treatment for serious complications centres on supportive medical care, including assistance with breathing and cardiovascular function when necessary.
The Michael Jackson connection
Propofol became the focus of international attention following the death of American pop star Michael Jackson in June 2009.
Jackson died at his home in Los Angeles after receiving propofol and other sedative medications from his personal physician, Conrad Murray. The circumstances of his death highlighted the potentially fatal consequences of using a powerful anaesthetic outside the safeguards of an appropriately equipped medical environment.
Murray was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Jackson’s death.
The comparison with Mazonakis, however, should be treated with caution. The reported detection of the same drug does not, by itself, establish that the circumstances or medical causes of the two deaths were identical.
Investigation into Mazonakis’ death
The reported toxicology finding adds another element to the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mazonakis’ death.
Investigators will need to establish the significance of the toxicology results alongside the medical evidence, the timeline of events and other material gathered during the inquiry.
The presence of a substance in a toxicology test does not automatically establish that it caused a death or determine how it was administered. Those questions require a full assessment of the evidence.
Further official findings will be important in clarifying the role, if any, that propofol played in the singer’s death.
