IndiGo Carries Over 60,000 Round-Trip Passengers Between Greece and India

by · Greek City Times

Greece’s first direct air links with India have carried more than 60,000 round-trip passengers between January and September, as IndiGo’s new routes from New Delhi and Mumbai help expand tourism and strengthen Athens’ connections with Asia.

IndiGo launched the historic connection on January 23, when an aircraft completed an eight-hour flight from Mumbai to Athens. The airline scheduled the second flight for the following day, departing from New Delhi for the Greek capital.

The new routes had generated considerable anticipation for months, with expectations that direct flights would boost tourist arrivals from South Asia. Passenger figures now point to strong initial demand from the Indian market.

According to data from Athens International Airport, IndiGo carried more than 60,000 round-trip passengers during the first nine months of the year. Traffic was split almost evenly between the two Indian cities, with 32,700 passengers travelling to and from New Delhi and 28,600 to and from Mumbai.

Flights to Athens recorded booking rates of between 87% and 92%, providing an early indication of demand for direct travel between India and Greece.

The new direct services have not significantly reduced passenger traffic through connecting flights. Airport data show that the number of Indian travellers using intermediate hubs remained almost unchanged compared with 2025.

Meanwhile, total passenger traffic between Athens and India reached 84,000 during January-August, marking a 25.9% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

The number of round-trip passengers between the two countries reached 100,000 in 2025. Current indications suggest that traffic could exceed that figure this year.

The benefits of IndiGo’s network extend beyond travel between Greece and India. The airline also connects Athens with other popular Asian destinations through its hubs in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Among markets outside India, Thailand and Vietnam attract the highest passenger traffic, giving travellers additional options for onward journeys across Asia.

The new routes form part of Athens’ broader effort to expand its long-haul air connections. That strategy began in 2017 with services by Scoot and Air China, followed by Juneyao Air in 2024. IndiGo’s services add another link to this expanding network, supporting Greece’s efforts to attract more visitors from Asian markets.
