Speaking at the naming ceremony of TEN’s newly built DP2 Suezmax shuttle tanker Anfield DP at Samsung Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, Guilfoyle highlighted the economic and strategic benefits of trilateral cooperation between the three nations.

She pointed to an agreement signed in Athens several months ago between Greece, the Republic of Korea and the United States as a major opportunity to restore Greece’s shipbuilding capabilities.

“This agreement can unlock $1.35 billion in infrastructure investments and 10,000 jobs for skilled personnel,” Guilfoyle said.

The ambassador added that the partnership would strengthen Greece’s shipyards through the integration of advanced American and South Korean technologies.

Guilfoyle described Greece’s shipbuilding sector as a vital strategic asset that could benefit from combining South Korea’s world-leading shipbuilding expertise, American industrial strength and Greece’s leadership in global shipping.

“Korean shipbuilding excellence, American industrial strength and Greek maritime leadership are converging to revitalise shipyards, restore critical industrial capabilities and secure the maritime routes on which our economies depend,” she said.

The proposed cooperation is expected to support both commercial shipbuilding projects and defence-related manufacturing capabilities.

Frigates, Corvettes and Submarines

Beyond commercial vessels, Guilfoyle specifically referred to the construction of frigates, corvettes and submarines, linking the initiative to supporting the Hellenic Navy, the US Sixth Fleet and NATO allies operating in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.

“Strategic investment in shipbuilding is investment in security itself,” she said.

The ambassador also thanked ExxonMobil for its continued partnership, noting that vessels such as the Anfield DP transport the energy, goods and trade that drive economies around the world.

Guilfoyle placed the trilateral partnership within the broader framework of US maritime and energy policy, describing maritime power and energy security as key pillars of American foreign policy.

She said growing cooperation between Greece, the United States and South Korea demonstrates how shared strategic interests can strengthen economic prosperity and regional security.
