Greece marks European Heritage Days this weekend, September 26-27, with free admission to state-owned archaeological sites, museums and monuments managed by the Ministry of Culture.

The programme reaches its peak this weekend as Greece takes part in the European Heritage Days for the 30th consecutive year.

The 2026 European theme, “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine,” focuses on the modern threats facing monuments from the climate crisis, natural deterioration and changing environmental conditions.

Events organised by participating institutions will also highlight the resilience and enduring value of cultural heritage while exploring ways to preserve and protect it.

This year’s programme also places particular emphasis on oral traditions, the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and the role of cultural expression during periods of crisis.

Special attention will go to protecting linguistic diversity and preserving local customs and traditions.

Most events will take place in person, while organisers will also offer digital activities, both live and on demand.

Participating institutions will host online activities through their own websites and social media channels, as well as through the official European Heritage Days pages on Facebook and Instagram.

The European Heritage Days programme brings together cultural institutions and organisations across Europe to promote access to and appreciation of cultural heritage.
