Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said this week that no government is ready for what artificial intelligence is about to do.

On a California stop that included NVIDIA and Sequoia Capital, he dropped the usual investment pitch long enough to talk about speed. Job losses from AI, he said, will arrive faster than any capital or society has planned for. “This is something that will happen. No government and no society is prepared for the speed at which it will happen.”

He said Microsoft’s Athens data-centre project drew little public pushback and that Greece has not seen a serious anti–data-centre revolt. The hard question, in his telling, is labour, not the buildings.

Greece, he added on the same trip, sits inside EU AI rules and cannot write a wholly separate code. The fight over how to regulate the technology, he said, will be decided in the United States.
