Concern over large-scale tree cutting in Mysuru
by Author · Star of MysoreSir,
It has recently come to public attention that 561 trees are proposed to be cut down in Mysuru. This is deeply concerning, especially when we are taught the importance of protecting nature, yet continue to witness large-scale tree loss.
Hyder Ali Road is a clear example. Once a vibrant, tree-lined stretch offering shade and supporting street vendors, it has now become barren. This loss not only affects the city’s beauty but also increases heat and impacts livelihoods. Mysuru is known for its tree-lined avenues, which are central to its identity. Cutting down trees on such a scale is environmentally irresponsible and will have long-term consequences on air quality and climate.
A city once known for its pleasant climate is already becoming increasingly hot and humid.
Development should not come at the cost of destroying our environment. The responsibility lies with authorities such as the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and other planning agencies.
I hope those responsible recognise the damage caused and take immediate steps to set this right by finding alternatives that preserve existing trees.
