On the Oscars red carpet — this year a shade of muted brick-red — movie stars tend to want to look like movie stars. That means understated elegance, sharp tailoring and classic silhouettes. Some may take risks, but for the most part, here, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, there is a premium on straightforward glamour and beauty.

There was a lot of white, some feathers courtesy of Chanel and Gucci and simple adornments, like the brooches that appeared on the breasts of some suits. If anyone zagged, it was the men: In a slight twist, some went for brown tuxedos instead of black, and Timothée Chalamet swerved when he accompanied his Givenchy suit with Chelsea boots, shaggy hair and dark shades.
